Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical facial resurfacing technique performed in a series of treatments combined with nutrient serums to enhance absorption of nutrients and nourish skin. The process mechanically exfoliates the outermost layer of dead skin cells, vacuuming them away, leaving your skin feeling softer and smoother — and if done well, looking younger and more vibrant.
Removing dead skin through microdermabrasion aids absorption of nutrient serums by up to 50% and it allows makeup to go on more smoothly for a more refined look and feel. Many choose microdermabrasion over harsher chemical peels or laser treatments because it is generally more cost-effective.
Microdermabrasion temporarily removes moisture so it should always be followed by application of a correctly matched skincare formulation to add the right level of moisture and nutrients back into the skin.
A series of 6–10 treatments is usually recommended for optimum results, with 2 weeks in between for skin to recover. The entire procedure usually takes about 20-30 minutes for the face, longer when including the neck and other body parts. Skin will be more sensitive to sunlight afterwards so avoiding the sun or the use of a good sunscreen is necessary. Post microdermabrasion treatment it’s important to complete the process with nourishing skin care products daily, to look after the renewal process.
Skinbar uses Diamond Microdermabrasion for the best clinical effects. Professional Microdermabrasion machines use either crystals or diamonds to abrade the skin. The most common crystals used are aluminium oxide crystals - they are second only to diamonds in hardness but are a lot cheaper.
Warning - while home dermabrasion kits are available, they act more like a scrub and can be too harsh damaging the skin.
EFFECTS. The treatment stimulates blood flow, which increases the nutrition delivered to skin cells this revitalisation often brings on a fresh vitality and glow appearance to the skin. This improves quality of cell production, which improves skin’s elasticity and texture. Microdermabrasion has been shown to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, shallow acne scars (though results may vary from person to person), the treatment helps to deeply cleanse pores and can minimise pore size.
It’s not recommended if you have skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, active sunburn, herpes, lupus, open sores, psoriasis, fragile capillaries or widespread acne. Speak to one of our Dermal Therapists in a free skin consultation to advise correct protocol. see facials page
